Design Challenge

Case Study

Living paycheck to paycheck has its challenges. It’s about keeping a close eye on our accounts and also ensuring we can pay our bills on time. At times we all overdraft our accounts and end up getting hit with fees. To make it worse, when something unexpected happens, we may be hit with multiple fees and overdraft to a point where it seems like there is no way out. Design and present a product feature, solution, or campaign that can help customers avoid fees (or excessive fees) and manage their accounts. UX artifacts could include flows, wireframes, affinity diagrams, high fidelity mockups, etc. You decide on the best approach. Note your assumptions and thought process as you approach this challenge.

My Objectives

  • Conduct Research
  • Build Personas
  • Low-Fi Wireframes
  • Test Wireframes
  • Hi-Fi Wireframes

Conduct Research

I conducted a survey using Google Forms by posting the link in through some of my group messages. I asked a few questions in regards to their demographics and banking experiences. The ages varied from 20 - 45 y/o individuals. Below are some of the questions and responses from this quick research.

Build Personas

This research helped me build three distinct personas by providing key insights into the users' demographics and banking habits. By analyzing the responses, I was able to identify patterns in how different age groups interacted with their banking apps, what features they valued most, and the common pain points they experienced.

Low-Fi Wireframes

I created a “Spare Score” to give users a quick snapshot of their financial health at a glance. It was featured prominently on the home page but designed to be flexible enough to appear on the user’s device home screen by utilizing widget capabilities.

The transaction block was a great tool for tracking spending, but with Spare, we took it further by predicting upcoming payments. Whether it’s your energy bill, Netflix subscription, or daily coffee, Spare helps users stay on top of where their money is going.

We also focused on native app functionality, which allowed us to tap into private APIs and provide more detailed, real-time notifications for a smoother, more intuitive user experience.

Hi-Fi Wireframes

After a few rounds of testing with family members, we gathered valuable feedback that led to several design changes. These adjustments helped refine the user experience and resulted in the following final assets, ensuring that the app was both user-friendly and visually appealing, while meeting the needs of the target audience.
